CRUFTS

Judge Richard M Garginer

First may I offer my sincere apologies for the delay in submitting this critique, those of you that know me will be aware of various matters going on in my life since Crufts, so my apologies. Thank you for giving me such a good entry of 43 dogs, I was very pleased with this, considering the number of dogs that could not be shown under me. I was disappointed though not to have had the opportunity to judge some of the recent imports into this country, it would have been interesting to see how they compare with our home bred stock. I am not too sure where the breed is going, there were some very good examples of the breed, but these were in the minority. I still find that the bitches on the whole tend to be stronger than the dogs. Saying that my main winners excelled both in breed type and movement, and I was well pleased with these. Rear movement has never been a strong point in our breed, we had over the years made some improvements with rear ends, but we seem to be moving backwards here, in some classes I struggled to find rear ends that I was happy with, our breed standard calls for “powerful, muscular, with moderate angulation and strong, low set hocks”. I would ask that breeders remember this when looking at suitable pairings, many exhibits had very weak back ends, and some very high set hocks, which resulted in very poor rear movement. In one class I struggled to find a dog with an acceptable movement. A previous judge had commented to me on the poor state of our mouths, I did not find this and only found one mouth that I was not happy with. Temperaments were superb and not one dog showed any signs of aggression, which is so important in the breed. My BOB, well what can one say, a dog that has excelled himself since the day he arrived on our shores, and has set breed records, one after another. It was an honour and a privilege to be able to judge him again today, and then watch him perform so well in the main ring and take a very much deserved group placing.
